Someone told me that medieval monks used to tread labyrinths to help them pray and meditate. I looked it up, and found that the labyrinth was first conceived of in Greek mythology, but that later the Christian church adopted it as a spiritual practice.

And now a memory strikes me! During college, I traveled with the choir to France. While we were there, we performed in the Chartres Cathedral. I remember seeing a golden labyrinth on the floor!

Walking the labyrinth reminds us that we are pilgrims on a journey. The journey begins with birth and moves forward to death and resurrection.
