The other day, one of my students asked me a rather unexpected and fascinating question. “Can I ask you a question” she said soberly. “What do you want your last word to be before you die?”

I said that I didn’t know and would have to think about it. I have been thinking, but still don’t know. It’s a difficult question. Shall I say goodbye? Or hello? Shall I express sadness? Or joy?

Today, I found a note on my desk from the same student. She wrote to tell me her last word. “It will be love,” she said, “because love is the most important thing.”
